How to Work from Home Successfully| Work from Home Tips


Now that you have made the decision to work from home, here are some tips to help you successfully transition to a home office:


1. Set up your workspace: 

Instead of working anywhere in your home, you must have a designated workspace where you can do so. Your workspace may be a room or an empty area with a door for privacy and a window for light. You should choose a quiet place because it would be improper to be on a call with a client when there are distracting noises in the background.

Make sure that everyone knows that it's your dedicated workspace.

Additionally, you'll need a table, a comfortable chair (to keep your back from becoming sore from sitting for so long), and additional lighting, such as a ring light that brightens the space, particularly when you're on a video chat.

You'll also need the following in your workspace:

- A monitor and Keyboard (if you can afford one)

- A printer

- A laptop

A headset with noise cancellation to reduce background noise and enhance sound quality.

additionally, a hands-free call receiver.


2. Software Requirements:

You will also need some applications or software to simplify and streamline your workflow.

A cloud-based drive like Google Drive is an example of one such application. With it, you may save your files electronically and share them with your teammates.

Slack is another example of a productivity app. You and your teammates can communicate internally using Slack. Slack lets you chat, share files, watch videos, and more. Slack also supports screen share through the ‘huddle’ feature.

3. Set Up Your Daily Routine:

You must set specific work hours for yourself. 

It involves creating a daily routine for when you wake up, shower, and get ready for work which aids in preparing your mind for work.

When you start work daily, your break, and so on, are all included in the activities you need to schedule. Also, you need to schedule Zoom sessions and other meetings with your coworkers.

Make sure your family knows your schedule and respects it.

Avoid becoming a workaholic by not mixing your personal and professional lives. Also, avoid working when you should be spending time with your family.

Keep your teammates informed of your work schedule and break times so they know when to contact you or not.

Working from home requires breaks, so schedule them carefully. Don’t assume you can work all day because you work from home.

- A 30-minute 'lunch break' gives you time to leave your desk, focus on something else, spend time outside your work area, and eat.

- A 10 minutes break after every 50 minutes at your desk will allow you to stretch and refocus.

DO NOT FORGET TO EAT. 

Working from home allows you some flexibility, but it also allows you to get carried away. A life-saving hack is to pre-planning your meals. And have it ready before you resume work.

If you like to snack, have a healthy snack at your table. And always keep water on hand so you can take quick water breaks to stay hydrated.

Have an end-of-day routine too. It would be a good time to quickly re-access the day's work and then create a to-do list of tasks you need to sort out the next day. Complete your top five tasks by 11 a.m. so you have time to deal with other duties that may arise during the day!

Finally, have your inbox empty and your workstation organized before you call it a day.

You've heard everyone say it – getting a remote job is the way of the future!

You can work from anywhere, get paid well, and have the time and freedom to travel the world.

It sounds like a dream, right? Getting your dream job is already hard enough, but when you add in working remotely it gets even tougher! I know this firsthand because I tried for a couple of months before landing my first remote job in customer service at a Travel Agency in the United States. So I understand how difficult it can be!

This article will walk you through the steps of finding a remote job, focusing on what you should do and where to find them.

Finding a traditional physical office job (which sounds strange to say) is not the same as finding a remote job, it has its own set of rules and tricks. 

How to apply for a remote job

Applying for a remote job, requires you to take certain steps to increase your chances of success. Here are a few ideas:

1. Look in the right places

There are countless job sites, so it's important to search in the right places for your dream job.

If you've been searching on one site for hours without success, try broadening your search to other platforms. Don't restrict yourself to just one job site!

2. Read the entire job description

Employers often include a specific word or phrase in job descriptions and require applicants to mention it at the top of their proposal.

This practice is common on Upwork. It helps employers confirm that applicants have read through the post. And since they receive a high volume of applications, these keywords serve as a filtering method to eliminate candidates who fail to follow instructions.

To increase your chances of being considered, avoid skimming through job descriptions. Instead, read them carefully and ensure you understand all requirements before applying.

3. Treat your job hunt like a full-time job

Job applications can take several hours to complete, with some requiring an hour or more per application.

To improve your chances of landing a job, create a structured schedule. Decide how many hours per week you’ll dedicate to job searching, submitting applications, and attending interviews.

Stay disciplined and focused—treat this process like a job! If you're serious about securing a position, aim to invest 20 to 40 hours per week in your job search.

Submitting one application and giving up won’t lead to success. Persistence is key. Keep applying, refining your approach, and improving your applications. The more effort you put in, the better your chances of getting hired—it’s a numbers game.

4. Go the extra mile

Don't just fill out the application; go the extra mile to ensure you're giving it your all and portraying yourself exactly how you want the employer to see you. Here are some ideas to help you improve your application:



  • Before you submit your job proposal, double-check your spelling and grammar. Use tools like Grammarly to help you spot incorrect spelling and grammar. Your application and resume must both be properly formatted. And everything must be neat, eye-catching, and professionally written. A sloppy resume gives the impression that you are disorganized and do not pay attention to details.
  • Make your job application relevant to the position you're applying for. Don't be tempted to use the same proposal for every job application. Also, do not use a job template from a friend. Examine the job description and tailor your proposal accordingly; this shows the employer that you are dedicated and have done your homework. Not only that but using keywords from the job description will help you catch the attention of the employers. If there are links in the job description, visit them and tailor your proposal accordingly.
  • Be honest about your abilities. Do not claim a skill or experience you do not possess and cannot deliver on.
  • When writing your proposal, use the appropriate tone. Maintain a professional yet friendly demeanor.
  • Don't just list your experience and accomplishments; tell the employer what you can do for them. Tell them how you intend to use your skills to benefit them. Make a short video introducing yourself and explaining what you will do for the employer if hired. This provides the employer with additional information about your personality. Personalizing your job application can help you get noticed.
  • Make the most of your connections. If you're applying for a job at a company, look them up on LinkedIn and see if any of your LinkedIn connections work there, and can introduce you or give you a referral.

5. Network

Network with people in your niche. If you are a content writer, look for content writers' groups on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Participate in any seminars or live events that the groups organize. This will broaden your horizons and expose you to new opportunities within your niche. Developing strong connections is essential for advancing in any career.

Let's explore Upwork.com, Nigeria's most popular remote job platform. Based in San Francisco, California, Upwork is a global freelancing marketplace. It connects businesses with talented freelancers worldwide.

The platform allows employers to post job listings with detailed descriptions and requirements. Freelancers can browse these listings and apply for jobs that match their skills and experience.

If an employer finds your proposal compelling and sees you as a good fit, they'll reach out through Upwork's internal messaging system to schedule an interview. If the interview goes well, you'll receive a contract outlining the job terms and milestones.

While Upwork is a great place to find freelance work if you don't land your ideal job there, a quick Google search can lead you to other opportunities.

Since the pandemic, many companies have shifted to remote work, making it easier to find such opportunities through a quick Google search. Setting up Google alerts for your desired job role can also help—you’ll receive email notifications whenever new positions are posted.

One common trait among those who have successfully landed remote jobs is that they took action.
